Aquilegia canadensis, wild columbine

A scenic drive west of Madison led to our traditional wild columbine viewing spot. They grew all along rocky outcroppings on the twisting old Highway 23 leading out of Wyoming Valley (near Spring Green, WI, NOT Wyoming State). A new "improved" road now bypasses this spot but there are a lot of other spots to view this beautiful native plant.

In my yard they prefer to "migrate" (by self-sowing) to spots on the edge of paths, or against rock walls. These are photographs from my garden.

Aquilegia: from Latin aquila, "an eagle," referring to the shape of the petals which is said to be like an eagle's claw
canadensis: of or referring to Canada
